Halloween Makeup: David Bowie

Halloween is the one day of the year when you can completely transform yourself into someone else. We channeled the inner child this year and turned Ashley, one of our Content Specialists, into a glam-rocker! Learn how to achieve this David Bowie-inspired Halloween makeup!

Step 1: Makeup

Rock and roll is more than just makeup. It’s usually a killer guitar, a great mic, and a huge attitude! We started by preparing the skin for a smooth finish. Ashley used Jane Iredale’s Smooth Affair For Oily Skin to achieve a smooth foundation for her makeup. This mattifying primer is formulated with a unique blend of antioxidants and botanicals to blur large pores and fine wrinkles for a smooth and shine-free finish.

Apply foundation next. Ashley selected the Flawless Creator Multi-use liquid pigments shade 0N for its mineral-rich formula that provides weightless and buildable coverage. It’s also oil-free and suitable for all skin types. She finished the look with Dermablend loose-setting powder to achieve a matte, smooth finish lasting up to 16 hours.

You’ll then need to define your features in order to achieve the glam-rock look of your dreams. Ashley chose Glo Skin Beauty Bronze Sunkiss, which is formulated with skin-safe minerals and antioxidant protection. It gave her a dimension that the Thin White Dude himself inspired. She then added a hint of blush on her cheeks with the Glo Skin Beauty Bronze because it has a great color payoff and a subtle sheen.

It’s time for the lightning! Ashley first used the Au Naturale Perfect Match lip pencil in Petal to outline the shape of her face. The 100% natural formula is highly pigmented and long-lasting while also nourishing the skin with jojoba. It’s perfect for musicians of all kinds (and their skin!). She formed the lightning bolt using a piece of flat cardboard. She filled in the lightning bolt with TERRY LipExpert Matte Liquid Lipstick Velvet Orchid because its smudge and smear-proof formula dries matte without overdrying the skin.

Ashley then gave the lightning bolt dimension by tracing a smaller line with BY TERRY LipExpert Matte Liquid Lipstick Sweet Flamenco. She separated the colors using Dr. Hauschka Eye Definer in Black. Hauschka’s eyeliner, made with mineral pigments, is ideal for all makeup needs. The multicolor effect is great for stage performances around the world.

It’s now time to finish off the rest of your face. Ashley wanted to add a bit of funky rock and roll, so she chose The Elements Zephyr wind Eyeshadow Palette in the shades Tempest & Glide. These highly pigmented vegan eyeshadows are smooth and blendable. Fill in your eyebrows with a natural-colored eyeshadow. Ashley chose the Youngblood Brow artiste kit in Blonde because it perfectly matched the color of her hair.

She then added a touch of shimmer with the Pure Powder Highlighter Moondust. The natural formula creates a shimmer that can be built up to make you feel like you are living on Mars. Finish the eyes by applying mascara. Ashley selected the Jane Iredale Longest & Thickening Mascara because it provides great color payoff while keeping lashes in condition! Add a gloss to your lips, like the Stila Beauty Boss Gloss Elevator pitch. This high-performance lip gloss is formulated with hyaluronic spheres, luminous oils, and other ingredients to give lips a plump look. It also provides lightweight, non-sticky hydration.

Step 2: Hair

No rock star would be complete without a hairstyle that is out of this world. Ashley added some grit to David Bowie’s iconic mullet by using Fatboy Texture Spray. The oil-absorbing formula helped tame flyaways and frizz while providing an undone look. She teased sections of hair only on top of her head with a teasing tool and clipped them aside. She then took a section of hair between one and two inches on either side, pinned it back, and finished the look by using Kenra Professional Platinum Whipped Taffy. This matte-finish firm-hold souffle is ideal for damp or dry hair. It will hold styles without leaving behind a crunchy texture.

Pin any flyaways or fallout to the back of the head, and finish with a medium-hold hairspray like the Kenra Professional Platinum HiDef Hairspray 16. Pin back any flyaways or fallout and use a medium-hold hairspray such as Kenra Professional platinum HiDef Hairspray 16. The anti-humidity formulation will keep hair in place during live shows, dancing parties, and celebrity appearances.
